FUTURE EVENTS
MONMOUTH/SEDGEMOOR
As outlined last month our current planning for an event next year is based around the Monmouth campaign and the Battle of Sedgemoor with an event in March 2011. Chris Scott has very kindly agreed to lead this one. He is working on a single day programme focused mainly on Sedgemoor but starting with a wider introduction to the campaign. Once this is available I will post it on the blog and also send it to you all by e mail. It would be useful to if all SW group members attending the Reunion in November could provide feedback on the programme and their availability to attend
SALISBURY VISIT & LUNCH - JAN 2011
Chris has also suggested the idea of meeting up in Salisbury in Mid or late January 2011 to visit the Rifles Military Museum followed by a meeting at a pub for lunch and perhaps a a quiz and or short lecture. I will look at finding a pub in or near Salisbury that ideally has a private room we can use and report back.
BATTLE OF EDDINGTON VIDEO
Tim Saunders has asked me to post this announcement-
"SW Regional Group members ANDREW DUFF and TIM SAUNDERS will be making a film on the 878 AD Viking invasion of Wessex, which of course culminated in the Battle of EDDINGTON There are a number of rival theories as to where the battle was actually fought, mainly based on the various Eddington’s claims and linguistic interpretations of names quoted in Saxon accounts. What few have done in any detail at all, is to examine these rival claims (we will be concentrating on the Wiltshire/Salisbury Plain and the Somerset theories) with a military eye i.e. in this case through the eyes of modern battlefield guides/military historians. Please contact Tim Saunders if you would like to be involved.
Shooting starts on Twelfth Night (5 Jan 11), the anniversary of Gurthram’s descent on Alfred’s festivities at Chippenham and will continue at various sites across our region (including Athelny in February) until the second week of May, which is the anniversary of the battle".
QUIZ & WEBSITE
As promised in September I will be producing a short quiz to test your knowledge and describing a website I have found useful for research. I should be able to add these to the blog next week.
Thats all for now though
